A group of five students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Siburan, Kuching emerged winners in Click! 4.0 through their initiative to find solutions to problems faced by children who lacked attention from their parents.
Calling themselves ‘The Funky Fresh Masters of the Universe’, the group managed to get the main prize of a full scholarship worth RM150,000 to further their studies at the Sunway University in its Pre-University programme or ‘Sunway University’s American Degree Transfer Programme’.
The annual competition, organised by the United States Embassy with the Ministry of Education, is a social entrepreneurship camp that targets the participation of students aged between 14 and 16, from secondary schools across the country.
The group’s leader Muhd Fahman Mohd Mohtar, 16, said the idea was a result of their survey that found people in Siburan were experiencing problems that drove teenagers, especially school students, to unhealthy activities such as illegal racing.
When met after the prize-giving ceremony, Muhd Fahman said they organised concerts for young people as a platform to showcase their artistic talent through a more positive way rather than loitering the streets.
The second prize went to participants from Sekolah Menengah Islam Al-Amin, Kemaman, who won scholarship worth RM75,000 to further their studies at the Sunway University in the same programme.
The first round of Click! 4.0 started on May 2 in Penang followed by a second round in Kuching from May 23 to 25, and ended in Kuala Terengganu (June 17 to 19).
